"The JRSO scheme has the potential to deliver many aspects of Curriculum for Excellence. Inspectors readily acknowledge that through the JRSO scheme, children have the opportunity to become responsible citizens and effective contributors."
Road safety learning offers opportunities to engage children through active and interdisciplinary learning.
The JRSO approach can assist schools in enabling pupils to achieve many second level experiences and outcomes, e.g. learning across health and wellbeing, literacy and numeracy; expressive arts; social studies and technologies.
Furthermore, JRSO activities also provide children with a unique opportunity to get actively involved in promoting road safety education throughout the school community and beyond.
“The JRSO scheme provides children with an excellent forum to be actively involved in improving their school and to engaging not only with fellow pupils, but with staff and parents. Very importantly, the JRSO scheme has the potential to deliver many aspects of Curriculum for Excellence. Inspectors readily acknowledge that through the JRSO scheme, children have the opportunity to become responsible citizens and effective contributors. Through involvement at several national JRSO competitions and events, HMIE has been highly complementary about children’s efforts, their innovative contributions and the positive impact on learning. The active learning observed by Inspectors through JRSO inspired activities is to be welcomed as is the fun children have in pursuing such activities and raising their wider achievement.
Through the JRSO scheme, children are very clearly improving their safety and wellbeing through raised road safety awareness and are being helped to become confident individuals in their local and wider environment.” Alistair Marquis, HM Chief Inspector, HM Inspectorate of Education
