Welcome to the Decade of Action 2011-2020!
What is the UN Decade of Action?
In 2011 the United Nations will launch a ‘Decade of Action for Road Safety’ with the aim of reducing global road deaths by 2020. The goal is “..to stabilise and then reduce road traffic fatalities around the world by increasing activities at national, regional and local levels.”
Why is it important for us to act?
Sadly, hundreds of children are killed or seriously injured on the world's roads every day. This makes road crashes the world's leading cause of death for young people.
What is even sadder, if that's possible, is that these deaths can be prevented, if measures are taken by governments, police, health practitioners and all road users to improve safety.
The Decade of Action is our opportunity to make our communities and streets safer wherever we live. It also provides those of us who live in more developed countries, with an opportunity to find out what we can realistically do to help those who live in the world's less developed countries.
As a JRSO, what can you do?
The first thing you can do is to take part in Poster competition for a chance to attend the Scottish event on May 11 2011. We want the JRSOs from 10 JRSO schools there to represent all of Scotland’s JRSOs. So get entering... you could be one of the lucky ten schools to win the competition.
See the competition page in this section for more information... good luck!
What can we do afer the competition?
There will be lots of ideas and suggestion on how to do what you can for the
Decade of action.
Keep your eyes on the site… you’ll soon find out!
