The Four Capacities

The JRSO ethos is one of pupil empowerment and partnership working to enable children to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.

1. SUCCESSFUL LEARNERS

SUCCESSFUL LEARNERS ARE ABLE TO:

  • Use literacy, communication and numeracy skills
  • Use technology for learning
  • Think creatively and independently
  • Learn independently and as part of a group
  • Make reasoned evaluations.

SUCCESSFUL LEARNERS:

  • Planning and delivering an assembly⁄class talk writing stories, poems, reports, etc
  • Collecting and using data (travel to school, traffic volumes, etc)
  • Using jrso.com to source information, upload and download material
  • Using streetsense2.com and related sites to source information, ideas and games planning, designing and maintaining a notice board.

2. CONFIDENT INDIVIDUALS

CONFIDENT INDIVIDUALS ARE ABLE TO:

  • Relate to others and manage themselves
  • Pursue a healthy and active lifestyle
  • Be self-aware
  • Develop and communicate their own beliefs and view of the world
  • Assess risk and make informed decisions
  • Achieve success in different areas of activity.

CONFIDENT INDIVIDUALS:

  • Being a JRSO and knowing the importance of the role in its wider road safety context
  • Relating to others as part of a team managing yourself as part of a team
  • Understanding the benefits of walking and cycling in terms of health and sustainability
  • Learning specific road safety messages in terms of risk and making informed decisions.

3. Responsible citizens

RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS ARE ABLE TO:

  • Develop knowledge and understanding of the world and Scotland´s place in it
  • Make informed choices and decisions.

RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS:

  • Knowing the contribution being a JRSO makes to road safety education
  • Understanding the role of the JRSO scheme within road safety education in Scotland, and within the wider context of ´Scotland´s Road Safety Framework to 2020´
  • Understanding road safety issues on a global scale
  • Making informed decisions about your own behaviour.

4. EFFECTIVE CONTRIBUTORS

EFFECTIVE CONTRIBUTORS ARE ABLE TO:

  • Use literacy, communication and numeracy skills
  • Use technology for learning
  • Think creatively and independently
  • Learn independently and as part of a group
  • Make reasoned evaluations.

EFFECTIVE CONTRIBUTORS:

  • Delivering a talk or presentation
  • Writing letters to parents on a topic
  • Working on a specific road safety issue within the wider school community
  • Being part of a team
  • Planning and running competitions, and sourcing prizes
  • Taking part in national competitions and enterprising activities.
